you put the phone jack(RJ-45) right into the modem, not need for your computer to be on!!

and there is skype which is not a true VoIP provider but more a SIP service....you have to leave your computer on, unless you get skype wifi with a skype wifi phone you don't even need a computer....

there are many choices now, it all depends on what you need or want.....
