Question: I would like to educate myself about VOIP where to start?

I come from a comms background and have a good understanding transmission protocols and a CCNA. Looking at jobs at the moment in the VOIP field. What are the key things to understand/learn with regards to VOIP?

Answer: Get as much VoIP phone info as you can. Here are other start-up suggestion:

- Be famaliar with the most commonly used Codecs, like G.711u/a, PCMU/PCMA, G.729a, GSM, etc.

- Something about the 3 primary protocols: SIP, H323, IAX.
- SIP is becomming dominant for stand-alone services and Windows based IP-PBX.
- IAX is dominant among IP-PBX Asterisk based services.
- Importance of QOS with VoIP.
- Importance of Latency, delayed and dropped packets and related issues that affect voice qualiy.
- Router issues for Port Forwarding and Triggering of SIP ports 5060-5070 and RTP ports 10,000-20,000, etc.
- NAT traversal issues and usage of STUN Servers.
- Know how to configure your own user configurable ATA's and Softphones

I'm self-taught just by doing extensive research over the Internet.
I've tested using many different VoIP services.

I downloaded user configurable softphones like the X-Lite, SJPhone, NCH Express Talk softphone, and 3CX VoIP Client from 3CX corp.
My favorite to use is the 3CX VoIP Client Softphone.

3CX also has a free down-loadable Windows based IP-PBX for learning about using IP-PBX systems.

I learned to configure my own Linksys PAP2T-NA and SPA2102-NA VoIP ATA adapters. I recommend the SPA2102-NA because it has built-in router and QOS.

Learn to configure these devices with BYOD VoIP services like InPhonex, les.net, and CallCentric. Currently, my preferred provider is CallCentric. I use them on my ATA's and Softphones.

The above should at least give you a starting point…

Question: I haven't got much of an idea what I'm looking at, I need to buy a new phone for the house but I've seen some which are compatible with VOIP but are expensive, is it worth the extra money.

Any advice on the whole system would be great.

I currently have a BT line and service and Sky TV with broadband package. Most phone usage will be evenings and weekend.

Answer: You don't need a VoIP compatible phone to use VoIP. You can use a regular telephone that plugs into a VoIP router. Most VoIP companies either charge very little for the router, or offer it free when you sign up for a plan.

One of the disadvantages of having a regular telephone plugged into a VoIP router is that it will be the only phone you can use. The fix for this is to get an expandable VoIP phone base. This is a VoIP phone with the router built in, and makes it possible for you to have multiple handsets throughout your home just like with a landline phone. This is why a VoIP compatible phone can be a bit costly.

There is a way to beat the high price of a VoIP compatible phone though. I highly recommend Packet8 since I use them for both my business phone, and residential. You have a choice to pay monthly, or yearly, and if you get an unlimited calling plan you can get a free VoIP compatible phone expandable up to 10 handsets, or an even nicer one for $19!

The biggest advantage of VoIP phone over a traditional landline is cost. Hands down. For example with Packet8's Freedom Unlimited plan you can get unlimited local and long distance calling in the US,Canada, Puerto Rico, Guam, US Virgin Islands, France, Italy, Ireland, Spain and United Kingdom, plus unlimited in-network calling to other Packet8 subscribers worldwide for $24.99 a month

There are other VoIP phone services providers with even cheaper calling plans, but in my opinion Packet8 is the best value overall.

There isn't any question about it - VoIP is fast becoming the telecomms methodology of choice for home telephone service. The amount of VoIP subscribers in the States increased over 150% between 2005 and 2006, and now about 10,000,000 homes use web telephone service. The sole need for home VoIP service is a broadband ( fast ) web connection. According to Voip.com, over 44 million Americans will be using VoIP by 2010.

Call Forwarding : You can receive your calls when you're offline and direct inward bound calls to ring on your mobile or phone. If your pal is offline but has turned on call forwarding you can reach them when they're away from their PC. Calling the 911 number with your broadband telephone is impossible so you'll have to use an alternative service for it. International calling : With this feature, you can call long distance to several countries. In several cases, you can keep your present telephone number. After selecting a VoIP supplier that offers the calling plan that's right for you, enroll in service on their website. When you receive it, installation is a straightforward case of connecting 1 or 2 wires and dialing a special number to turn on service. No tools or technical abilities are needed to install web telephone service, and you may use your present telefone. After the wire connections are made, dial the special 'activation' telephone number that came with your VoIP adapter.

You're going to need to enter an activation code, which was doubtless sent to you through e-mail when you enrolled in the service. The easy way to Use Multiple Phones with Your VoIP Service Since your VoIP adapter is intended to connect to one phone only a simple method to use net telephone service on all of the telephones in your home is to utilize a cord-free expandable telephone system. Then place the wireless handsets anywhere in the house you would like. Buy a system that includes the overall number of telephones you need, and attach the base telephone to your VoIP adapter. Their service supplier keeps and implements all of the communications hardware and software necessary to convey the Centrex service and then sells various services to the customer. Switching is provided at the central office of the supplier instead of at the clients business. Hosted Telephony : Hosted Telephony ( AKA IP Centrex ) is a communications service managed for users who need to employed a communication system that's administered by another company. The words 'hosted' or 'managed' are substituted for 'Centrex' given that an IP-based precise set is generally wider than Centrex offerings furnished.

Are you using VoIP yet? Chances are you have heard about VoIP, but you can know of it as 'digital telephone service'. This is the selling term cable T. V provider's use when advertising their version of web telephone service. The terms VoIP ( Voice Over Net Custom ), net telephone service, broadband telephone service and digital telephone service are used transposably, and all refer to the technology used to make fone calls over the Net. Flaws Using your personal computer to make and receive calls means it must be kept 'on ' just about at every point, unless you purchase a 'stand-alone ' telephone that connects to your net connection and has the 'VoIP ' software. VoIP began to become popular as a cash saving substitute for 'land line' telephone service a year or two back, and now it is quickly turning into the home telephone service of choice. Your current number can't be moved to the network and it could take 2 makes an attempt to get a new number in your neighborhood code.

Calling the 911 number with your broadband telephone is not practical so you'll need to use an alternative service for it. Medium and enormous enterprises that can benefit in hosted IP telephony and VOIP service are also certain to surge. Hosted Telephony, IP Centrex, managed IP PBXs and network-based voice service are all possible options. Many businesses are presently looking for a choice to a premise-based telephone system, there are lots achievable, and they come in all styles and sizes. IPBX systems are usually an area network ( LAN ) systems that interconnect IP telephones.

IP Centrex : Centrex is a service offered by many local telephone service suppliers which can enable the customer to have characteristics that are normally related with a personal branch exchange ( PBX ). This is the gizmo that serves as the 'brains' of your web telephone system. In about a week, you will get a VoIP adapter ( a. K. An an ATA ) in the post. When your VoIP adapter arrives, follow the simple instructions to connect it to your broadband modem / router as well regarding your telephone and PC. Another good place to find recommendations and info is on web forums. You can need a flashlight to see all of the connection ports, particularly if your personal computer and modem are found underneath a desk ( as mine is ).

Most folks who take part in forums are thrilled to offer guidance and suggestions. Do you need unlimited local and international calling, or do you only need 200-400 mins a month? Do you need a plan that includes unlimited world calling? Do you need a VoIP plan that lets you utilise a softphone as well? You can save a large amount of money by changing to web telephone service, and you will be 100% cheerful with your call to change to VoIP so long as you have selected a trustworthy supplier that provides a plan ( and price ) that matches your wishes. Know What sort of VoIP Service Plan you need all of the best net telephone service suppliers offer one or two differing kinds of service plans, so you actually need to choose what you need prior to starting comparing suppliers.
