i want to contribute in open source project. My interest area are network security, voip security, web security or finance domain (FIX protocol for example). Can anybody guide me how to conritbute? I know of sourceforge and freashmeat but not very clear about the status of project listed, popularity etc.

On sourceforge's projects bar, you'll find a help wanted item. It lists all volunteer help wanted ads for projects on sourceforge. Contact the person listed and you will likely be in business. Be sure and read the sourceforge documentation on what utilities are recommended to work with their CVS and compiler farm remotely.
