Does anyone need one? It depends on a person's uses. There are groups of people who think they "need" a video phone. They're cool and really help sales and other communication.
As far as VOIP, well that's interesting because voice over IP is a dramatic downgrade from what most people have now, copper or fiber lines. The delay in message arriving, the low quality, the one-way acceptance, it all sucks compared to copper or fiber lines. Since it's cheap (for now), like with Skype or Yahoo IM, it's a novelty to be able to talk to someone while you're online and they're on a phone. Outside of the novelty, it sucks.
Does anyone "need" video? Sure. Does anyone "need" voip? Not unless it's all they have access to.
