There is nothing wrong with an AMD processor. I have Intel Core-Duo, Quad-Core, P4, and I have AMDXP, AMD64 and X2.

If you are doing hardcore engineering, Intel is the way to go. If you are doing browsing on the web, anything new is the way to go. If you are going to play games like Doom, Battlefield 1942, etc then you need an AMD X2 or Intel Core-Duo.

If you get a PC with 512MB of memory, be sure to buy one with Windows XP on it, that's not enough to run Vista. Vista needs at least 1GB, 2GB of memory preferrably.

Keep in mind that the Sempron is a cut-down version of an AMD processor, kinda like the Celeron of old. Though I would definately suggest a Sempron over a Celeron hands down.

If you want cheap, you are probably going to need to go HP.

Get a Pavilion a6110e, bump the memory to 1GB, and upgrade the video card to a 64MB NVIDIA GeForce 7500LE, the 8600GS if you have the extra $30, and that should bring you right around $480USD or £239 if you can get free shipping.

I live in the US, so getting stuff like that is really easy, not sure about Europe though, sorry, but at least it will give you an idea of about what to look for.
