Like said above. I have a high speed Satellite Internet Connection with a contention ratio of 1/5 .I have roughly 7 users browsing at the same time. I want to integrate some satellite phones on my LAN.
--1. I am in Iraq and I dont have much access to the outside world except with my main office (who have no technical expertise) (besides i would like to understand this project before i get a quote from my head office)
--2. I have my VSAT Modem hooked up to a 15something port 10/100 ethernet switch with 7 laptops connected and in use all the time.
--3. I must have very good quality voice capabilities to communicate with various clients across the world
--4. I preffer good VOIP Hardware Phones rather than yahoo and skype. Yahoo and skype are cheaper but i preffer the Hardware phones. Yahoo and Skype are second options.
--5. Do i have to implement some sort of a Quality of service thing on my Satellite Modem to enable good VOIP capabilities?

I recommend deploying a Ethernet to Ethernet Router between the VSAT Modem and the internal switch a Cisco 871 is a good option and comes with a wireless option as well.
The device comes with a SDM (Web Gui Manager and is fairly easy to set up)
This device can then supply the following
1. Firewall to protect devices
2. comes with 4 port built in switch that has a furthur Power injector to power the IP Phones. The switch can still connect to one of the ports
3. Recommend this device be set up for QoS not the modem (unless the modem does QoS very well) The wizards on the SDM set up QoS for Voice for you.
4. You can then use Cisco IP phones with a SIP image to connect back to a reputable SIP provider any where on the Web.
5. Recommend you use G711 codec this means each call requires at least 80kb of BW (64kb plus overhead) so if you need to support 10 phones then at least 1Mb of bandwidth needs to be available for calls
6. SIP providers can also supply break out numbers in many different countries (allowing customers to call a local number (to their country) which get routed back to you
7. This config does not require any special config and should work without opening any ports back into your network
You can simply keep connected with an RV satellite web system while you are on holiday. Why not bring all the conveniences of home with you, including high speed net? .
