How Can I Calculate the Latency Between Audio Signals – Say From a VOIP System?

May 1, 2009

Trying to calculate the time difference as one hears an audio sound byte delivered from a microphone, through a set of head phones.
Actually - yes you can - I'm looking for the existing formula the audio people use to verify latency issues with audio systems on Computers. The speed of your CPU and the operating system used to help maneuver the signals are the deciding factors. There is no need to have an outside source while talking on a LAN built system or closed loop. No wireless or satellite scenario is necessary for a closed loop.

I don't think you can calculate it, as it can vary from hour to hour, or from second to second. The path may include a satellite link (22k miles) or two, or may include none.

IP packets can take any path, and you can't guess at what it is ahead of time, although you can get an idea of it afterwards by asking the router for the path a packet took.
