How to Install Cisco VOIP Service for a Small Firm?

October 18, 2011

Question: My company is planning to setup Cisco VoIP service to communicate for inter-branch communication. We don't need to connect PSTN phone in VoIP. Please tell me what are the devices that I need to install this service.

Answer: Voice over IP refers to technology that transmits live voice communications across a network connection using IP protocols. (Check this for more VoIP Phone Info) A key benefit of Voice over IP is its capability to help reduce expenses because phone calls travel across the data network rather than the phone company's services. IP telephony encompasses the entire range of VoIP related services such as the interconnection of phone sets for communications; associated services such as invoicing and dialing plans; and basic features including group calls, transfer, forward, and hold. These features might previously handled by a Private Branch Exchange (PBX).

Voice over IP is the basis for more advanced unified communications solutions. Crisco's Unified Communications system of voice, image, mobility, and Internet Protocol communications offerings provides the tools for creating a single converged network that can handle multiple types of traffic concurrently. Crisco's solution provides this functionality while sustaining a high level of network resilience, Quality of Service , and Protection. Important advantages of Cisco's telephony technologies include:

A versatile, interoperable migration strategy that allows you to select IP products that handle your current need, while offering a smooth path for accelerating IP integration Quality of Service technologies that provide excellent voice quality by means of tight control of latency, loss, and distortion Network management technologies that provide system administration, repair, setup, fault monitoring, and device management.
The framework of Crisco's IP communications solution is composed of communications endpoints, call-processing agents, and telephony applications.

There are a lot of different phones that you can use with a VoIP service, depending on what you are looking for.

1 - You can use just a software softphone on your computer, like Express Talk, which is a completely free download:

2 - You can plug a USB Phone into your computer:

3 - You can Use an IP Phone if you have a network set up:

4 - You can use a telephony board to allow you to connect a standard phone to your computer:

I don't know exactly what you are looking for, but hopefully one of those links will help you.

"For networking protocols, this common-sense stuff includes using standard network byte order and only a handful of packets types to transmit data. Using something different than network byte order creates a potential area for a bug to hide. More packet types means more opportunities for a bug to stay hidden, especially if such a bug depends on a particular combination of previous packets. I was reminded of this as I was working on our implementation of Cisco's Skinny Client Control Protocol (SCCP), which is used in some Cisco voice-over-IP (VoIP) phone systems. I understand that Cisco inherited SCCP and its code base when they bought the startup Selsius in the late 1990s. Beyond that, the over-engineering is, unfortunately, found in many different protocols, not just SCCP. But seeing how important SCCP is to everyday communications, it is critical that we address these issues as they come up."

Thanks for this video!! A customer of mine was having this issue at several of their sites, and I knew what the problem was, and how to fix it, but I was never able to duplicate this for myself. Who knew it would be this easy. Thanks.

The emergence of VoIP service providers was brought about by the disappointments that businesses have experienced in using traditional phone systems for business communication. These VoIP service providers present a phone system that operates far better than plain old phone systems. VoIP phone systems use the Internet to receive and make calls on contrary to traditional ...

It can be easy to do, if you know what you are doing. First you need to configure CME. From the command line you can go to config mode and go under telephony-service. There is a setup option there. That will get you up with basic features. You will then need to setup the ephone on the router, configure the voice port, make a dial peer and a dial plan, setup a trunk to the gateway....etc etc. Ok, so I lied, it is a little complicated. You can search Cisco.com and there are tons of config examples.

Enjoy.
