How Likely Is It That Everything We Do Is Tracked?

May 2, 2009

Just wondering if it is even possible to record every single phone, VOIP, video conference and website visited. Seems like a bit of a stretch to think that everything we do is tracked down and recorded, but I'm not terribly computer literate, so I'm not sure.

Super computers around the world run by governments pretty much touch everything. The computers check for key phrases, words and use sophisticated algorithms to determine if a call is of value to the government. So in essence the answer to your question is yes to one degree or another. There is no privacy regardless of whether you are using land lines, cell phones or IP phones. The telephone companies networks are also being monitored just like the web traffic. High end encryption can make this more secure. However, with new super computers like the IBM Roadrunner released last week what was not brute force crackable encryption yesterday suddenly becomes crackable today.
