Most programs require you to type in a really long number. it's called a serial number and it's supposed to make sure that you didn't illegally download the software, although it doesn't really work very well. It will probably work in another computer (after all, any computer can read a disc provided it has the right type of disc player.) It certainly can't do any damage.
