I Have Mobile Broadband, Are VoIP Services Are Available to Me?

May 2, 2009

Because I have mobile broadband, and use a USB data card, I do not have a modem. The data card is a Compass 597 by Sierra Wireless. I would like to get VoIP, but you apparently have to have a modem to use it. Is there some way around this?

The first device on this page is the one I have: http://nextelonline.nextel.com/NASApp/onlinestore/en/Action/DisplayPhones?filterString=Data_Cards_Phone_Char

Based on the device specs, I would think you can use VoIP over your PC. It has the speed capability and traffic flow management necessary.

So, I would think you can use Skype, Gizmo5, Efonica, etc. You can even try VoIP carriers like CallCentric, Inphonex with their downloadable softphones or a user configureable Softphone like the 3CX VoIP Client. So, you will just need a headset with microphone to use PC based Voip.

But, because you are tied to a USB data card, it doesn't appear you can use a hardware base VoIP service that requires an external VoIP ATA phone adapter.
