voice over ip, voip providers,

I Recently Acquired a Cisco 7912 Voip Phone. How Do I Use It at Home With Some Sort of Voip Service?

January 14, 2012

I would like to connect my Cisco 7912 phone at home and use it with some sort of voip service. I'm definately a newbie with voip stuff and I could use some help.

Do I need CCM? Can I use SIP?

I've seen lots of instructions for the 7940 but very little information about the 7912. Is this technology obsolete?

Some advice would be apprecaited.

Thanks!

The 7912 stopped production and shipping sometime around 2007. So, in a sense, it's becoming obsolete, although Cisco my still be providing some customer support.

According to the data sheets, the 7912 is "capable" of SIP protocol.
If it has been upgraded with SIP Protocol software license SW-SMH-UL-7912, then I expect it can be configured for SIP VoIP operation.

However, it appears that the 7912 is designed primarily to work in the Cisco CallManager server environment and my not easily be reconfigured to directly connect to SIP VoIP services outside the network without connecting the the CallManager server first.

There are various open SIP VoIP service providers that allow BYOD (bring your own device) SIP VoIP connectivity. Some examples of providers are CallCentrc, InPhonex, Les.net, Voip.ms. I have my user-configurable (unlocked) Linksys PAP2T-NA VoIP ATA configured to work with these services.

If you can't get the 7912 to work for you, then you may want to consider the Linksys SPA900 Series of IP-Phones:

These IP-Phones are designed to work with an IP-PBX or directly connect to SIP VoIP services.
