Where to Start Learning About VoIP?

October 19, 2011

Question: I would like to educate myself about VOIP where to start?

I come from a comms background and have a good understanding transmission protocols and a CCNA. Looking at jobs at the moment in the VOIP field. What are the key things to understand/learn with regards to VOIP?

Answer: Get as much VoIP phone info as you can. Here are other start-up suggestion:

- Be famaliar with the most commonly used Codecs, like G.711u/a, PCMU/PCMA, G.729a, GSM, etc.

- Something about the 3 primary protocols: SIP, H323, IAX.
- SIP is becomming dominant for stand-alone services and Windows based IP-PBX.
- IAX is dominant among IP-PBX Asterisk based services.
- Importance of QOS with VoIP.
- Importance of Latency, delayed and dropped packets and related issues that affect voice qualiy.
- Router issues for Port Forwarding and Triggering of SIP ports 5060-5070 and RTP ports 10,000-20,000, etc.
- NAT traversal issues and usage of STUN Servers.
- Know how to configure your own user configurable ATA's and Softphones

I'm self-taught just by doing extensive research over the Internet.
I've tested using many different VoIP services.

I downloaded user configurable softphones like the X-Lite, SJPhone, NCH Express Talk softphone, and 3CX VoIP Client from 3CX corp.
My favorite to use is the 3CX VoIP Client Softphone.

3CX also has a free down-loadable Windows based IP-PBX for learning about using IP-PBX systems.

I learned to configure my own Linksys PAP2T-NA and SPA2102-NA VoIP ATA adapters. I recommend the SPA2102-NA because it has built-in router and QOS.

Learn to configure these devices with BYOD VoIP services like InPhonex, les.net, and CallCentric. Currently, my preferred provider is CallCentric. I use them on my ATA's and Softphones.

The above should at least give you a starting point…

If I understand, you're saying you need two devices, one inside the 2801 and one outside the 2801 to connect to each other using port 5000.

Your access-list extended inbound_acl
shows a permit for UDP 5000 but not TCP 5000.

Could it be that the connection is TCP?

Been there. You need to port forward your client so it can connect to the trackers and other clients. Just follow the link below. It'll save me a lot of typing and give you a place to go for more questions. The second link is a great forum for P2P apps like BT. You can learn a lot here.
Good luck and I hope this helps.

My real ex-husband was so disgusted and humilitaed by you that he had to kick the wall when he heard you call yourself my son's step-dad. Get this straight. You are not my husband. .. Even if you were...a man marries a woman with a full grown son ...that man is never the "step - father." Especally when the man already has a father. He is the "buddy" if that. We have no marriage. It was a fraud marriage OK. I never petitioned for you to live in the U.S. It's not my fault you are too stupid to figure out the details.

Here is a image which does a good job of explaining frames and packets " "

"A packet is a formatted block of information carried by a computer network. Computer communications links that do not support packets, such as traditional point-to-point telecommunications links, simply transmit data as a series of bytes, characters, or bits alone. When data is formatted into a packet, the network can transmit longer messages more efficiently and reliably."

The rest you can learn from the links below.

Have you gone thru the online FAQ?

Or contacted their tech support?

I think you will get your best answers there.

Check that the Upnp service is running.

Control Panel / Administration tools / Services

Scroll down the list and check that Upnp is set to automatic.

(right click on the service to set)

Restart the computer and It might be ok

Another service to check is Wireless zero configuration should be automatic

Make sure your DHCP server is enabled on the router. Also make sure the router is well ventilated and not exposed to direct sunlight at this may slow the router if multiple clients are connected. Also disable MAC filtering in the wireless section and use basic encryption like WEP versus WPA

The enable DHCP

Don't plug the router into anything and don't use installation CDs.

Plug the power cord into the router and plug a cat5 ethernet cord into on of the four LAN switch ports on the router (and not the WAN port). Plug the other end into the PC.

On windows
Start-->Run
cmd
ipconfig /all

write down the IP address of the Default Gateway on your Local Area Network Adapter.

Open your web browser and type address of Default Gateway}
ie

The Web Administration Username and Password should be
Username: admin and the Password should be left blank by default.

Enable the DHCP server on the router. Save the settings.

Now enable the Wireless radio and give it a name (SSID) and use encryption (64-Bit WEP is sufficient). Give it a 5 character password and REMEMBER IT (make it easy to remember like the first 5 digits or your phone number or your street address). Save the settings and the router should reboot.

Now plug the WAN the cat5 cable into the modem and then other end into the router's WAN port. Cycle the power on the router.

Wait about 30 seconds.
Go to the laptop of WiFi desktop and enable the WiFi connection and scan for WiFi networks. Connect to your (the SSID you entered) then type in the password and you should be good.

You can always use a cat5 ethernet cable and plug it into one of the 4 switch ports on the router to get a more reliable connection.

I am not sure how is called in LinkSys, but all the routers have advanced wireless options somewhere. Look for something that sounds like "TX Rate" Using a low value, makes your wireless a bit slower, but makes the comunication to don't drop so easily, at the end, you will see that instead of loosing speed you finish gaining it because the comunication works better.

It's possible security is also an issue, changing from WPA to WEP will make your router a bit less secure, but it can do things work better. (Don't worry about the loss of security, you have to have a very good hacker as a neighboor to worry about that)

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology this summer is wrapping up data transmission protocols and other technical details for NHIN Direct, the health information exchange protocol being developed for small physician practices. The office will release NHIN Direct specifications late in the summer in anticipation of live testing this fall, an ONC official said. "Real-world demonstrations help us tackle problems related to the specific interchange we're looking for," Dr. Doug Fridsma, acting director of interoperability and standards at ONC, said at a Government Health IT conference in Washington last week, the namesake publication reports. Fridsma said that NHIN Direct is intended to help practices achieve "meaningful use" of health IT by simplifying HIE tools and allowing small providers to participate in the Nationwide Health Information Network. "The NHIN Direct project only solves one piece of the puzzle," according to Fridsma. "We're focused on...
