I cannot get the IP phone to work and am wondering if it has anything to do w/ my home telephone service being VOIP and using an IP address.

what kind of IP phone is it!!! if its a skype IP phone, just download the software and make calls....! find out what kind of VoIP (SIP) provider of this phone!!!
you can not just plug it in the computer, you gotta download the right software....!
I use several VoIP and SIP providers and free services!!!
