How does it work - can I call for free (whether from home or my cellphone) using today's technology or are we not there yet? Also, what cellphone should I buy if I do not want to commit to any cellphone company like Bell, rogers, fido etc. Apparently most if not all cellphone are somehow "connected" to the service provider (as I was explained) so if you buy a cellphone you can only use it with the specific service provider!?!? What if I want to buy a cellphone that can in the future work with any company I choose. is this not an option? THANKS

VoIP replaces your home phone line. It doesn't include your cell phone (at least not yet).
If you want a cell phone that's not committed to a particular cell phone company, get an "unlocked" cell phone. Even if it is unlocked, it will still only work within the bands and protocols of which it is capable. The most capable would be an unlocked quad-band GSM phone.
