What Are the Advantages of VOIP Over a Normal Home Telephone System?

October 18, 2011

Question: I haven't got much of an idea what I'm looking at, I need to buy a new phone for the house but I've seen some which are compatible with VOIP but are expensive, is it worth the extra money.

Any advice on the whole system would be great.

I currently have a BT line and service and Sky TV with broadband package. Most phone usage will be evenings and weekend.

Answer: You don't need a VoIP compatible phone to use VoIP. You can use a regular telephone that plugs into a VoIP router. Most VoIP companies either charge very little for the router, or offer it free when you sign up for a plan.

One of the disadvantages of having a regular telephone plugged into a VoIP router is that it will be the only phone you can use. The fix for this is to get an expandable VoIP phone base. This is a VoIP phone with the router built in, and makes it possible for you to have multiple handsets throughout your home just like with a landline phone. This is why a VoIP compatible phone can be a bit costly.

There is a way to beat the high price of a VoIP compatible phone though. I highly recommend Packet8 since I use them for both my business phone, and residential. You have a choice to pay monthly, or yearly, and if you get an unlimited calling plan you can get a free VoIP compatible phone expandable up to 10 handsets, or an even nicer one for $19!

The biggest advantage of VoIP phone over a traditional landline is cost. Hands down. For example with Packet8's Freedom Unlimited plan you can get unlimited local and long distance calling in the US,Canada, Puerto Rico, Guam, US Virgin Islands, France, Italy, Ireland, Spain and United Kingdom, plus unlimited in-network calling to other Packet8 subscribers worldwide for $24.99 a month

There are other VoIP phone services providers with even cheaper calling plans, but in my opinion Packet8 is the best value overall.

The thing is "VOIP" business is though the computer. It relies on the power. It also relies on the computer working properly. If you want the telephone to work for you when it has to work for you, why have this? It doesn't make any sense. Additionally, I do not think it's as good of a voice service or as reliable generally. It's just another gimmick to get people computerized. It's a cute way to weaken your telephone's usefulness.

The whole idea with a telephone is as a separate function. When the power is off, your telephone still works 99% of the time. In my whole life, I've seen the telephone power cut off at the same time as the rest of it, once. That's fairly rare. Treat your telephone as an appliance you simply don't mess with like with extra power needs. At the very least have one like that plugged in all the time; I mean here a basic no frills phone.

So what? It still looks absolutely authentic besides that I put the electronics into the battery case. I'm not into wargames and will probably never find somone else with another field phone to try it.

I live in Idaho and I can go online and get a well report for any well that has been drilled. Its is not up to date yet as far as I know but drillers are required to file a report on all wells drilled.

It depends on your equipment. Some work without your computer needing to be on, and just plug into your modem or router. Other systems require you to use a microphone connected to your computer or run a handset plugged in through your computer, in which case you will need a sound card or the sound chip integrated into most motherboards active and the drivers loaded.

The funny thing about your specific example is that more and more Wiccans are moving away from using or calling the watchtowers in casting a circle because of it's *Christian* symbolism.

There are no angels in Wicca, and the names of the angels are straight out of Christian mythology and magic, which is where it came into the OTO and the Golden Dawn where Gardner picked them up.

I find it highly ironic that some Wiccans won't use it because it's Christians (and I am Wiccan) and some Christians don't like it because it's pagan.

Truly funny.
